The Wheelwright House
History

Wheelwright freshly painted
Sea captain John Wheelwright came home from the American Revolution to build a house that is a typical reflection of middle class family life in the late 1700s. It is modest in size and simple in design, with Georgian features and a practical, classic, wood- paneled interior.
Captain Wheelwright was captain of the brig Abigail and made many voyages to the West Indies. He served aboard the continental ship Raleigh and commanded several privateers out of Boston. He died in 1784, one year after the peace treaty with England, and his widow Martha and their two children continued to live in the house. The first floor contains a fine exhibit of family life during the period and the second floor is an attractive two bedroom apartment with its own entrance and stairway.
